Before he made one of the most addictive games of the decade, Luca Galante was coding the screens on slot machines.

And no, that isn't where he learned to hook you. He says so himself, and I believe him.

Out of all those years he took exactly one thing.

A little tune.

In one of those games, when a treasure chest opened, there was a jingle he loved. He loved it so much that it pissed him off that the animation didn't live up to it.

So he decided to fix it. He made his own game, and built a combination of tune and animation that the junkie in your brain cannot stop consuming.

That game is Vampire Survivors. Five bucks, a BAFTA for best game, and more dopamine generated than in the entire history of Las Vegas.

One guy. One jingle. One chest animation.

Now imagine what forty people do when their only job is to drown your brain in the good stuff.

At the University of Portsmouth they compared the loops in the game to the ones in a casino. On the r/patientgamers thread, 585 comments, someone nailed it without meaning to (or maybe he was one of the researchers): "keeps a steady stream of dopamine flowing."

He meant it as a compliment.

And that is the interesting part. Nobody felt cheated. They felt studied.

Because you don't outrun a sniper with a steady stream of dopamine aimed straight at your brain, not at 11pm. At that hour your willpower is already in its pajamas.

I installed it one night to try it for ten minutes. Two hours later I was still there.

Two hours. Two.

I couldn't tell you what happened in between, and I was there for all of it.

At least Luca leaves you a door at the end of every run, but not everyone is that nice.

Play another run, or ten, or none at all. But now knowing what rules you are playing by.

Nobody's timing you here. Except you. Stop it.

For when...

...you want the exact opposite of a slot machine: Outer Wilds.

No XP, no levels, nothing to farm. The only thing that progresses is what you have understood, and that doesn't get wiped.

Each loop runs 22 minutes and ends on its own. There is no manual save and you don't need one: quit whenever you like and all you lose is the loop you were in. A weeknight gives you two or three, and you know from the start what time you are going to bed.

Not for you if you need a game to reward you every five minutes: here the reward is the look on your face when it clicks. It's on PC, PS5 and Switch.

Hit reply and tell me which one is your slot machine.
